Homeless campsite prior to demolition

Barnstable police cleaned up several homeless camps including two off Old Colony Road and Yarmouth Road in Hyannis.

Police and Barnstable County inmates began the daylong task at 8:00 a.m.

Lt. David Cameron said tearing the camps down is about protecting the homeless population who lived in tents hidden in the wooded areas.

“The cold weather is upon us now and we are out here trying to motivate these people to seek the kinds of help they need to find shelter for the winter months. They do not belong in the conditions out here. We are trying to do everything we possibly can to avert a tragedy in the woods,” Cameron said.

Cameron said officers notified occupants 10 days prior to the cleanup that the camps would be torn down and any belongings would be disposed of. There were 14 individual campsites targeted.

According to Powerball, the odds of winning the jackpot is 1 in 175 million. The odds of getting all 5 numbers and not the Powerball, earning $1 million, is 1 in 5 million.

Christmas trees: real or fake? Tell us your favorite in the comments section of this post.

Sure, everyone appreciates some good holiday decor. But have you ever been tempted to take it easy on yourself and purchase an artificial Christmas tree?

Purists won't go near them, but for others, the thought of chopping down a tree - leaving needles, sap and leaking water in your living room - is not their idea of a happy holiday.

Despite the hassle, real trees outsell their artificial cousins by more than a 3-to-1 margin each season, according to the National Christmas Tree Association. Bear in mind, of course, artificial trees can be reused every year.

Readers, what do you think? Are you undertaking the Griswold family tradition this year, or are will an artificial tree do the trick for your family?

Masked and Armed Home Invasion in Hyannis

Marcel Young

Barnstable police were called to a home on Nautical Way for a reported home invasion Wednesday night at 10:35 p.m. The victims, a 66-year-old male and his 26-year-old daughter, told police two men knocked on their door and forced their way in the home while pointing handguns at them.

According to Barnstable police, the men searched the house for and stole cash, marijuana, and silver notes from the early 1900’s, before leaving the residence.

Silver notes are legal U.S. currency, which was produced by the U.S. Treasury from 1878 to 1964 as part of the circulation of paper currency.  Initially, the bearer of the note was able to redeem it for actual silver that was “held on deposit” at banks.  Since 1968, the bills have been redeemable only in Federal Reserve Notes, but are still valid legal tender.

Two hours after the armed invasion Barnstable police responded to a compliant at Sea Side Pub on Main St. of a customer attempting to pay with counterfeit money. Officers quickly determined the counterfeit money was in fact the silver notes that had been stolen two hours earlier during the home invasion.

Police arrested 35-year-old Marcel Young of Dorchester in the early hours of Thursday morning and transported him to the Barnstable Police Headquarters for booking without incident.  Young’s physical appearance and clothing description matched that of one of the suspects reported by the victims of the home invasion.

Marcel Young was arraigned in Barnstable District Court this morning on felony masked/armed home invasion and armed and masked robbery. The counts carry a range of penalties, including a potential minimum penalty of five years in state prison on one count, a potential minimum penalty of 20 years in state prison on another count, as well as a potential maximum penalty of life in prison.

Barnstable Red Raiders Ready for Everett

$
0
0
Barnstable senior captain Andrew Ellis has led his Red Raiders all season long and straight to an 11-0 record and bid for a state title on Saturday at Gillette Stadium at 1:30 pm.

No matter who wins, no matter what the weather, this one will be a bruiser.

The undefeated Barnstable High Red Raiders - ranked no. 1 in Eastern Massachusetts - face the no. 2-ranked and 11-1 Everett High Crimson Tide at 1:30 pm, Saturday, Dec. 1, at Gillete Stadium.

Barnstable defeated Everett for the first time in school history on September 28 when both teams stood at 3-0 and Everett maintained the number one ranking in the state. In a driving, windblown rain, the Red Raiders defeated the Crimson Tide to take over the top-ranked slot and have not looked back. Barnstable defeated Lincoln-Sudbury Tuesday night to finish at 11-0 and in so doing matched the school's greatest season: the vaunted, unbeaten 1995 campaign that saw the Red & White go 11-0 and finish the top team in Div. 1A as well as Super Bowl victors.

Everett has gone 11-1 - including a 42-14 rout over Masconomet in Tuesday's MIAA Div. 1A playoff - and boasts a 44-4 record over the past four years as well as two state titles, nine overall.

Barnstable hammered Lincoln-Sudbury 28-7 Tuesday night at Taunton High, and finished with 404 points scored on the season, a new school record for most points scored in a season (2010 - 372) since football was established at BHS 120 seasons ago in 1893.

Red Raider senior quarterback and captain Nick Peabody has turned in the second-best season for a QB in school history with 2,422 yards passing and 32 touchdowns thrown. He's also rushed for 342 yards and scored 7 touchdowns. The leading scorer for Barnstable is senior wideout Tedaro France who has 16 touchdowns and 96 points. On the opening play of the season against Durfee, France ran a kickoff return 100 yards to tie the all-time mark set by Art Pacheco in 1970.

But Peabody and France aren't close to being the only offensive threats for the Red & White eleven. Junior running back Hayden Murphy - who ran for 191 yards on 28 carries and three touchdowns against L-S - has accumulated over 900 yards rushing while wide receiver Dylan Morris has amassed over 650 yards receiving and scored 13 touchdowns.

Everett boasts an equally old football program, but it has also won two National High School football championships to go along with 9 Super Bowl titles while Barnstable has won two SUper Bowls - 1995 and 1999 - and has fallen in the postseason playoffs every time its visited since the inception of the current playoff system.

Not this year.

Tuesday, Barnstable erased all doubt that it stands atop of the high school football hill in this state.

And did anyone mention Tedaro France?

He not only has 758 yards receiving this season as well as 16 touchdowns, but he showed a different side altogether when he raced for 106 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns versus Plymouth North earlier in the season. And if it's not enough that France is the leading receiver on the Red & White this year, well, then take a look at junior Hayden Murphy who is averaging 6.63 yards per carry and has a string of four straight 100-yard plus games in the teams's last four games.

But just as Barnstable's stellar offensive line has gone largely unsung this season - Tom Grimmer, Tom Harrington, Allen Buckley, Chris Kennedy, and Owen Murray - Everett's line has achieved numerous accolades. It's star 6'5, 350-lb. left tackle, John Montelus is headed to play for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish next fall.

The captains of both teams went to Gillette Stadium today to meet with Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) officials and New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft. Barnstable's captains are Tom Grimmer, Andrew Ellis, Bryan Hardy, Ryan Litchman and Nick Peabody.

Peabody was made an offer to play football at Princeton next fall, while Ellis was offered a scholarship to play at Division 1 Bryant University. Grimmer will head to Merrimack to play football next fall while Hardy is deciding between offers from Wesleyan and Bentley. Ryan Litchman - who played arguably his best game this season versus L-S - hopes to walk on at Cornell University.

Parking is free at Gillette Stadium for all high school games Saturday. Adult tickets are $15 and students are $12. Tickets will be sold at the stadium.

Heartbreaking Loss for BHS Red Raiders Football in State Championship

In a game filled with ample interceptions, turnovers, missed catches, and personal fouls by both teams, the Barnstable Red Raider's hopes for a state championship were dashed by the Everett Crimson Tide on Saturday afternoon at Gillette Statium. The final score of the game was 20 to 19, with Everett taking home the Division 1A MIAA Superbowl win.

The game started with Everett capitalizing on an interception early in the 1st quarter. At the half time, Everett lead Barnstable 13 to 7. Everett expanded their lead to 20 to 7 in the 3rd quarter. Barnstable scored back to back touchdowns in the 4th and drove down the field with seconds left in the game, but was unable to get to the end zone.

Following the game, Red Raider fans took to Facebook and blamed the referees for bias and bad calls. The Red Raiders end their season with a 11 and 1 record.
