Coyotes on Cape Cod

Charlie Lewis, the Senior Animal Control Officer for the Town of Barnstable, said coyote populations grow when there is an abundance of food.  While coyote populations are in a downward trend right now, it’s breeding season and that could soon change.

“Coyote pups are born in April or May so June is the time we generally receive more sighting and complaints,” Lewis said.

Owners should avoid feeding any animals outside and bird feeders should have spill shields so any seed spilled out is caught before it hits the ground. Food sitting outside is a draw for mice, moles, chipmunks and others which then themselves a draw for coyotes.

Lewis said owners should never allow their pets to roam free.

“I encourage owners to limit dusk to dawn tie out periods as that is primetime for coyote movement,” Lewis said.

If you do see a coyote, making a lot of noise is the best bet. Lewis suggests using a boat type air horn or a good whistle, which are easily to keep close.
