The Bay Lane PTA was one of 100 recipients selected out of more than 2,000 applicants nationwide.
“I am amazed that Barnstable received this grant money, when you look at the number of applicants, it’s amazing,” Superintendent Mary Czajkowski said.
The $5,000 grant will enable Centerville Elementary to build on its already successful Lego robot after school program.
“There is a curriculum that they are going to use that will be focused on building and design in a community. So the kids might be building a police station and have an officer come in and speak to the children about their building and their part in the community. It’s a great opportunity to build in some excitement around Legos with some real world social studies curriculum,” Principal Matt Scheufele said.
During the event families could peruse 10 stations of Lego challenges, including a robot demonstration and rocket launcher.
“I think it’s terrific, you see the light in the kids eyes, you can see they love to create, they love to be here with their parents,” said Czajkowski.
