Hyannis fire officials were called to the Hyannis neighborhood after some early morning shoppers reported seeing smoke near Rt. 28 at 4:22 a.m. Saturday.

First responders followed the smoke and found 45 Pilgrim Ln. on fire. Deputy Chief Dean Melanson said that while working to put out the blaze they began to have water issues with the fire hydrant so they began directing additional companies to enter near Baxter Road.

“While we were in the process of setting up an additional water supply we found a fire at 33 Pilgrim Lane,” Melanson said.

Members of the Barnstable Police Department then began to search the area and almost immediately found additional fires at 27 Pilgrim Ln. and 135 Baxter Rd.

It took 30-40 firefighters from Hyannis, Centerville, Osterville, Marstons Mills, West Barnstable, Barnstable and Yarmouth Fire Departments an hour and a half to knock down the fires.

The homes all have varying degrees of damage.

“45 Pilgrim Lane is heavily damaged and is probably going to have to come down, 33 Pilgrim Lane and 135 Baxter Road are moderately damaged and 27 Pilgrim Lane has minor damage,” Melanson said.

None of the homes were occupied at the time of the fires. Officials are working to notify the owners; different parties own the homes.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital with a broken nose after he was struck in the face by some kind of material while battling the blaze. He was treated and released this morning.

The Hyannis Fire Department, The Barnstable Police Department and the State Fire Marshal’s office are investigating the fires. If you have any information about the fires call the State Fire Marshal’s arson hotline at 1-800-682-9229.
