On Saturday, July 21 at 11am the 3rd Annual Memorial Motorcycle Ride for the Fallen will kick off in honor of the 13 fallen soldiers, sailors, and Marines with ties to Cape Cod who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the ongoing War on Terror.
The police-escorted ride will cover a scenic 37 mile route along the Cape Cod Canal and Route 6A through the upper and mid-Cape areas and end at the Flax Pond Recreation Center in South Yarmouth.
The event, entitled “Big Nick’s Ride for the Fallen,” is in memory of United States Marine Corporal Nicholas G. Xiarhos of Yarmouth and is organized in honor of all 13 of Cape Cod’s fallen warriors as well as all the Gold and Blue Star families, Veterans, and active duty service men and women who continue to serve our country.
Gates open at Barnstable County Correctional Facility in Bourne at 8:00 am. Motorcycle riders may participate in the ride for a $20 registration fee per motorcycle, and $10 per passenger.
The event includes live entertainment, food, a special long sleeve commemorative shirt, and motorcycle equipment and displays. At 10:30 am the pre-race program and announcements will begin including guest speakers and a Color Guard ceremony.
Riders will depart at 11am and should arrive at Flax Pond recreation Area at approximately 12:30pm. All members of the community are welcome to attend post-ride activities at the Flax Pond Recreation Center.
Community members are encouraged to observe the ride from safe viewing points as it travels primarily along Route 6A through Bourne—Sandwich—Barnstable—and Yarmouth. Citizens are also encouraged to watch the ride as it passes through the front of Dennis-Yarmouth regional High School on Station Avenue in South Yarmouth.
Proceeds from the ride will benefit five nonprofit organizations which support military veterans and community members:
- The Massachusetts Iraq and Afghanistan Fallen Heroes Memorial Fund
- Cape Cod Cares for the Troops
- The Nicholas G. Xiarhos Memorial Fund
