A Pennsylvania man was arraigned on rape and other charges stemming from alleged incidents that occurred at the Sandwich Christian camp more than 30 years ago.

Richard P. Smith, 65, of Media, Pennsylvania who was indicted by a Barnstable County Grand Jury last month for rape of a child, indecent assault and battery and five counts of indecent assault and battery upon a child under the age of fourteen was back in court Wednesday.

Smith was appointed a new attorney, according to NECN.

Four former campers said the abuse took place in 1981 when Smith worked as a counselor at Camp Good News; at the time the campers were between the ages of 11 and 15.

The charges are the result of a two-and-a-half-year investigation into abuse allegations involving 9 potential perpetrators, according to a press release from the Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office. Two of the alleged perpetrators have since died and others cannot be prosecuted because of the statute of limitations and other reasons, such as a lack of evidence.

Smith is still being held on $10,000 bail and will be back in court May 28 for a pre-trial hearing, according to the Cape Cod Times
