If someone were given a picture of Scargo Tower, they probably wouldn't think this castle-like facade was nestled off Route 6A.
What is it? Scargo Tower is a 30-foot-tall cobblestone tower on the top of Scargo Hill in Dennis, Mass.
Leading to the top of the tower is a spiral-staircase, free to the public. The view from the top overlooks Scargo Lake, Cape Cod Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The curved coast of Truro and Provincetown are also hazily visible.
The plaque on the tower reads: "This tower and hilltop were given to the town of Dennis in 1929 as a memorial to Charles Tobey (1831–1888) and Francis Bassett Tobey (1833–1913). Loyal sons of the village of Dennis where their Tobey ancestors settled in 1678."
According to New England Travels, the current tower standing today is actually the third tower to be built on the land. The first tower was built by the Tobey family in the 1870s but did not survive a storm. The second burned down. The modern-day cobblestone tower was gifted from Tobey family descendants to honor their ancestors.
History: Originally referred to as the Tobey Tower, this tower has been rebuilt three times since 1870s, according to New England Travels.
Directions: Take Scargo Hill Road off of Route 6A in Dennis. Continue down Scargo Hill Road until you see a sign for Scargo Tower, a dead-end road.
