Pastor Bruce Smith, parishioners, and community members, including State Representative Randy Hunt, gathered to celebrate a new beginning for the Hyannis church, known for its mission to feed the homeless. At its peek, the Calvary Baptist Church pantry prepared 250 meals three times a week.

Smith said that despite his challenges in the last few months he never lost faith.

“From the moment this church burned down people just stepped right up and helped us, and it just warms my heart to see that,” Smith said.

Smith lost his wife Caroline to cancer just weeks after the fire.

It will cost the church about $1.5 million to rebuild; Smith says they still need to raise nearly $500,000 in order to rebuild the kitchen.

To help make up for that shortfall, lead contractor, Randy Florence, suggested featuring low-bidding sub-contractors on the church’s sign.  Smith said several business have already earned a spot on well-travelled West Main Street. The sign reads, “From the ashes, we shall rise again.”

Smith expects construction to be completed within the year.

The church is accepting donations, they can be mailed to Calvary Baptist Church BOX 984 Hyannis, Ma 02601.
