The Cape Light Compact (CLC) installed LED streetlights at 8 locations in Barnstable last week, according the CLC's website.
The installation is part of a pilot energy saving plan that could save several Cape and Islands towns more than $500 thousand dollars a year.
LED lights can use 40-50% less energy and typically last longer than traditional bulbs.
Cape towns included in the pilot phase include Wellfleet, Provincetown, Truro and Brewster.
By the completion of the project in 2014 the CLC plans to install LED lights in all town-owned streetlights across Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard.
“This pilot phase will help us gain experience with the new technology and gather public feedback in advance of rolling out the complete retrofit of nearly all 14,000 municipal streetlights across the Cape and Vineyard in 2014”, said Kevin Galligan, Program Manager in a press release.
The CLC predicts a $5 million savings by the completion of the project in 2014.
