Hutchenrider, who was raised in Barnstable, first went to work in the Town Clerk's office in 1987. Six years later, she was elected Barnstable Town Clerk.

During her twenty-year career as the Town Clerk, Hutchenrider has overseen 38 elections, including several special elections. During the same period of time, she served as the past president of the Massachusetts Town Clerks Association, past president of the Cape and Islands Town Clerks Association, and former chair of the New England Municipal Clerks Institute and Academy. Hutchenrider also attained the designation of Master Municipal Clerk, awarded by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.

Hutchenrider's last official day of work was Tuesday. According to her co-workers, the day was filled with more hugs than normal, but otherwise the normal activities of running the Town Clerk's office, including helping a town resident with genealogical research in the final hours of the day. On Tuesday evening, Hutchenrider's family, friends, co-workers, colleagues, town clerks from other communities, and numerous elected officials celebrated her career and retirement at a surprise party at The Riverway restaurant in Yarmouth.

Last month, Barnstable Town Council voted unanimously to appoint Assistant Town Clerk Ann Quirk to the position of Interim Town Clerk. Hutchenrider will formally swear in Quirk as Interim Town Clerk of Barnstable at Barnstable Town Hall on Friday.
