Removal of sand build-up in Hyannis harbor began Friday, but officials say the process will not affect the ferries, the Cape Cod Times reports.
The process, known as "dredging," acts almost like a vacuum, sucking up excess sand in the harbor and moving it elsewhere to avoid harming ships' underbellies.
The impact on ferry services such as Hy-Line Cruises and the Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority should be "very minimal," according to Barnstable Assistant Harbormaster Joseph Gibbs.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will oversee the process, according to the Times. The process is estimated to be completed July 3.
