Barnstable Police Department patrol officers and detectives were called to the Cape Cod Hospital Emergency Room Saturday night at 9:11 p.m. regarding a 24-year-old seeking treatment for a gunshot wound to his lower body, according to a press release.
Around the same time officers were called to the Hyannis Youth and Community Center on Bassett Lane in Hyannis to check out a disturbance.
After reviewing the night’s events from the HYCC security system, officials determined the two events were related.
Police discovered the victim had a confrontation in the parking lot with a subject later identified as Wallace R Grace III, age 19, of Hyannis.
The investigation also revealed that during the dispute Grace took out a handgun and reportedly fired several shots at the victim.
Both Grace and the victim fled the community center prior to the arrival of police.
Police identified Grace as the suspect and began searching for him.
Grace turned himself into the Barnstable Police Department Sunday and was charged with the following armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon/firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm.
The incident is still under investigation, but no other suspects are being sought.
Grace will be arraigned Monday in Barnstable District Court.
