According to a report in the Cape Cod Times, a man transported to Cape Cod Hospital yesterday with severe cuts on both legs told hospital staff that he had been bitten by a shark.

The apparent attack, attested to by multiple eyewitnesses, occurred off Truro's Ballston Beach on Monday afternoon.

The man and a companion “swimming a ways off shore, possibly body surfing,” reported to The Cape Cod Times, “there was at least one seal bobbing around at the time.”

Sunbather Walter Palmer of Philadelphia told the Cape Cod Times, “We were watching. A very large black dorsal fin came up between the two of them. A lot of people saw it.”

Greg Skomal, a shark expert with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, said to the Times, “In a year where there’s a high seal abundance and we’re seeing great white sharks, it’s on the list of potential candidates.”

The man, who has declined to be identified, was in stable condition during the ambulance ride to Hyannis, according to NECN.com.
