The Barnstable Municipal Airport Commission has affirmed the success of its online flight tracking system by renewing a software licensing agreement for another year.

Commissioners voted 6-0 July 24 to contract with ITT Exelis, Inc. of Clifton, N.J. to use its Airscene Version R6 software through next June at a cost of $77,966.

Two one-year renewal options are part of the agreement. By going to the airport's web site, the public can get an almost-real-time view of all aircraft arriving at and leaving from the airport. For security purposes, there is a 10-minute delay built into the system.

The software permits anyone concerned about a low-flying or noisy plane to identify the aircraft operator, its speed and altitude. People may also use the online system to leave a comment or complaint with the airport's noise abatement coordinator.

"The renewal of the contract shows the commission's commitment to continued
aircraft noise abatement even in tight economic times," said Airport Manager Roland "Bud" Breault.
